Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) is seeking a Fire Safety Manager to support the Department of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS)! This is a valued role on the EHS team, providing management and direction to CMU's Fire and Life Safety programs along with supporting Emergency Response programs. This work contributes to the health and safety of our campus community through effective partnership with university officials, staff, and students to assist them in adhering with the terms and conditions of Carnegie Mellon's programmatic commitments. This responsibility also includes federal, state, and local regulatory obligations regarding building code and life safety compliance. We will look for you to guide compliance with:
* National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)
* Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry (UCC)
* International Code Council (IBC, IFC, IMC, IEBC, IFGC)
* Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)
Core responsibilities will include:
- Supervise the activities of and provide mentorship to the fire safety team.
- Aid in leading, motivating and fostering a safety-conscious culture to reduce incidents and injuries.
- Develop, administer, and manage fire safety programs and guidelines throughout the University to ensure compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal laws, regulations and standards concerning fire and life safety.
- Consult with various university community members to build effective partnerships and alliances that enhance program development.
- Participate in the plan review of new construction and/or renovations of existing buildings to ensure compliance with the applicable codes and standards.
- Direct fire evacuation drills at university locations, including off campus buildings located in the Pittsburgh, PA area.
- Conduct building fire safety audits, document identified deficiencies, assist with the identification of corrective actions and track items to completion with the assistance of campus partners.
- Supports campus partners in ensuring the continued compliance of all fire protection and life safety systems.
- Participate in incident reviews and develop appropriate mitigation strategies when needed.
- Develop a working relationship with the Authority Having Jurisdiction, including the City of Pittsburgh and the University Property Insurance Provider.
You must demonstrate:
- Ability to solve problems, influence others, and show dedication to campus safety through improvement of sound fire and life safety practices.
- Advanced or expert knowledge of fire and life safety applications of local, state, and federal laws, codes, regulations, standards, specifications, and policies, International Fire Code, International Building Codes and NFPA standards and methodologies.
- Success working with contractors/vendors supporting mutual safety objectives.
- Team-oriented and collaborative. Cooperates with others without dominating the group, values team members for their contributions and professional abilities, and always treats people with respect.
- Exceptional communication skills. Communicates ideas respectfully, honestly, and clearly, and considers the suggestions and opinions of others.
- Proven ability to supervise and train personnel.

Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in fire safety or equivalent related field experience required
- Master's degree in Fire Science, engineering, or equivalent related field experience preferred.
- Minimum 5-8 years of fire safety management and emergency planning, 10 or more years of experience preferred.
- Equivalent experience and/or education may be considered in lieu of degree
- Prior experience in a higher education setting, research facility, or hospitals preferred.
- Extensive experience with fire protection and life safety systems preferred.
- Experience developing, writing, and implementing fire prevention and life safety programs/policies preferred.
- Demonstrates excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to interface with CMU community members at all levels of the organization.
- Certified Fire Inspector, Certified Plans Examiner, Certified Fire Protection Specialist, or Certified Building Inspector or equivalent certification preferred.
- Knowledge and competency in using CampusOptics preferred.
