POSITION SUMMARY:
General maintenance mechanic duties as assigned by a Maintenance Supervisor in areas of heating, cooling, plumbing, electrical, pneumatic preventative maintenance and general construction.
Continuing education for maintenance and professional subjects is available. The incumbent is highly encouraged to obtain a minimum of 8 hours annually. These hours will be recorded and used in consideration for future advancements along with merit, hands-on-experience and job related training.
As a condition of employment, Duquesne University requires all new employees —full-time and part-time, including adjunct faculty—to get a COVID-19 vaccine and provide proof of their vaccination upon commencement of employment.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Monitors, maintains, and performs basic repairs to building electrical systems such as fixtures, switches and outlets; assist licensed electricians with advanced repairs as appropriate.
Monitors performance of HVAC systems for the facility; performs basic repair/replacement of components, as appropriate, including filter changing and cleaning of units.
Monitors and performs basic maintenance of plumbing systems, to include standard repair of leaking faucets, cleaning obstructed waste lines, and performing basic modifications to plumbing and water supply systems; assist licensed plumbers, as appropriate.
Performs carpentry maintenance tasks including routine drywall repair, window repair, cabinet and countertop repair, door hardware installation and painting.
Ensures proper care in the use of maintenance equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
Performs snow removal and spreading salt related to building access and hazardous walkways as assigned.
Notifies supervisor of unusual conditions.
Assists outside contractors and vendors with tasks such as utility isolation and work area access to allow for the completion of their work as required.
Orders and picks up basic materials from Facilities Management.
Coordinates the work of those assigned to you by work leaders or supervisors.
Performs supplementary duties, which may include: moving and repairing furniture and appliances and assisting with special events where supplemental manpower is required for the completion of the event.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS:
Minimum qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent
At least 5 years of experience in building maintenance
Ability to pass a drug test and background check. (Note: A conviction will not necessarily bar you from employment.)
Physical ability to lift and manipulate objects weighing up to 70 pounds and to perform work from ladders, scaffolding, and elevated surfaces
Alternately, the successful candidate may possess any equivalent combination of experience and training, which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the essential job functions. This includes, but is not limited to, the following:
Knowledge of basic and general building maintenance methods, techniques, materials and equipment.
Knowledge of minor repairs of small appliances.
Understanding of basic mechanical and electrical principles.
Knowledge of applicable University, state and federal regulations, policies and procedures related to position.
Knowledge of building and facilities maintenance, safety and security issues and precautions.
Basic computer skills.
Ability to follow verbal and written instructions and procedures.
Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Ability to work as a team member and foster a cooperative work environment.
Ability to safely use hand and power tools.
Ability to safely and efficiently operate, maintain, and repair equipment, machinery, and tools.
Ability to perform a variety of routine and preventive building maintenance tasks to include, but not limited to, hot water systems, tile and flooring, and minor repairs to appliances.
Ability to maintain thorough and accurate records.
Ability to avoid confrontational situations and report all incidents to Facilities Management.
Ability to act with integrity and dependability.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Various indoor and outdoor work environments are to be expected which include extremes of temperature, noise, dust and humidity.
